With this study, OCFA hoped to gain a better understanding of firefighter job demands. Firefighter Fatality Reports
Below are the detailed reports from tragic fires occurring around the country. Reports include the Esperanza Fire, Thirtymile Fire, Cedar Fire to name a few. Check back as this section will be updated as reports come available.
Esperanza Final Report
(esperanza_00_complete_final_draft_05_01_2007.pdf / 3.8 MB) – The Esperanza Fire was reported at 1:11AM on October 26, 2006 in Cabazon, California. At approximately 7:15AM, five wildland firefighters from US Forest Service Fire Engine 57 were overrun by fire. All five firefighters were fatally burned by a sudden intense fire run.
Cedar Fire Final Report

– In the early evening of October 25, the Cedar Fire started in San Diego County. The fire,
initially burning under a Santa Ana Wind condition eventually consumed 280,278 acres and destroyed 2,232 structures, 22 commercial buildings, and 566 outbuildings, damaging another 53 structures and 10 outbuildings. There was one fire fighter fatality, 13 civilian fatalities and 107 injuries.
Thirtymile Fire Report
(30mile_report.pdf / 9.3 MB) – On July 10, 2001, four Forest Service fire suppression personnel were killed after they became entrapped and their fire shelter deployment site was burned over by the Thirtymile Fire, in the Chewuch River Canyon, about 30 miles north of Winthrop, Washington.
Mann Gulch Report
(Mann Gulch.pdf / 646 KB) – On August 5, 1949, a wildfire overran 16 firefighters in Mann Gulch on the Helena National Forest in Montana. Only three survived—the foreman and two members of an 18-man smokejumper crew that had parachuted into a small valley or gulch near the fire. These deaths were a shocking loss to the firefighters’ families and friends.
